Jammu and Kashmir Police has set up a special investigation team to investigate the murder of a woman doctor, allegedly by her male doctor-friend, who later tried to commit suicide with the same knife he had allegedly used to kill her, police said on Saturday.
Police are yet to come across a confirmed motive, and said the accused, Dr Johar Mehmood Ganai, is in hospital, still critical.
Both Ganai and the deceased, Dr Sumedha Sharma, had done Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree from a private dental college in Sehora, on the outskirts of Jammu city. Thereafter, Sharma did her Masters from Delhi and Ganai completed his pos-graduation in Jammu.
The incident took place late Tuesday night and on Friday, leaders and activists of Bajrang Dal and some other Hindutva organisations protested in Jammu, calling it a case of ‘love jihad’ — Hindutva groups’ terminology for relations between women from the Hindu community and men from the Muslim community.
They also asked the J&K administration to enact ‘strict laws’ to check such incidents.
Sharma was from Talab Tillo area of Jammu city, and Ganai comes from Doda district’s Bhaderwah and lives in Pamposh Colony of Janipura, in Jammu.
‘We are yet to question family members of the deceased, as they are in mourning,’ a police officer said on Saturday. An SIT headed by a Deputy SP-level officer has been constituted to investigate the matter, the officer added.
A case has been registered at Janipura police station under IPC Section 302 (murder).
According to sources, on Tuesday, the day of Holi in Jammu, Sharma had gone to Johar’s house in Pamposh Colony, where they appear to have had an altercation over something. Thereafter, Johar allegedly inflicted multiple stab wounds on Sharma’s abdomen, a police source said.
He then posted on Facebook that he was fed up with life and was going to commit suicide, after which he used the same knife to allegedly stab himself several times, the police said.
According to an officer, a relative of Ganai saw the Facebook post and alerted Janipura police. Police entered the house after breaking open the doors and found both in a pool of blood. Sharma was declared dead on arrival at hospital, and Ganai was admitted to the ICU.
On Friday, J&K Bajrang Dal workers, led by its UT unit president Rakesh Bajrangi, held a demonstration in Jammu, asking the UT administration to bring in a strict law to stop such killings and what they claimed is conversion of Hindus, who are a minority in Jammu and Kashmir.
IkkJutt Jammu Party chief, Ankur Sharma, called for augmenting the present criminal justice system to ‘properly tackle organised crimes such as love jihad’. He also demanded strict action against the accused and said absence of any action would lead to more such cases.
